Devi Mahathmyam

About Devi Mahathmyam

The greatness of the Devi Mahatmyam (also known as Durga Saptashati) is extensively explained in several ancient texts such as the Rudra Yamala, Marichikalpa, Meru Tantra, Kataka Tantra, and Chidambara Rahasya. It is a powerful text of 700 verses describing the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura.

The Devi Mahatmyam has the ability to grant fruits as per the devotee's Upasana (worship). If Sri Chandi is pleased, she confers on her devotees both earthly prosperity as well as supreme knowledge.

Sakama vs. Nishkama Upasana

The text reveals that the Divine Mother fulfills the aspirations of all devotees based on their intent:

  • Sakama Upasaka: One who does sadhana with a specific desire or goal achieves whatever earthly prosperity they aspire for. For example, King Suratha was bestowed with unmixed prosperity and his lost kingdom.
  • Nishkama Upasaka: One who does sadhana without any expectation or desire achieves Moksha (Liberation). For example, the merchant Samadhi was conferred with divine knowledge according to his aspiration.
